aware that extraordinary amounts of energy and water (3 gallons for each
gallon of bottled water) is consumed to create bottled water and environmentalists
warn of the hazards of plastic dumping.
Water treatment plants are highly inefficient as they discharge over 30% of water
with decontaminants; over 50% of the remaining distributed water, on average, leaks
from the pipes carrying the water; and of the remaining, approximately 30%
(only a small fraction, i.e. 1-2%) of the total treated water is used for drinking and cooking.
